Labor Day And The Grind Versus The Mission

It’s my official song of Labor Day, Aesop Rock’s “9-5er’s Anthem.” Work should have purpose. Just like school is supposed to develop and bring something out of us, work should continue the process. If it’s a job we do, we may have to find it for ourselves – including switching careers to one where we can see it. If it’s a job we provide to others, it’s no small consideration to figure out how to make it purposeful for those we employ.

A grind will grind people down and out. A mission will propel people up and forward. It’s not a secret, life and every day is a form of work. We need holidays to make time time to pause, reflect, and play. But we also need to take time to find our own causes and then go fight for them on the rest of the days too.

We the American working population
Hate the fact that eight hours a day
Is wasted on chasing the dream of someone that isn’t us
And we may not hate our jobs
But we hate jobs in general
That don’t have to do with fighting our own causes
