Sunday Music: Where Did You Get That Blank Expression On Your Face? (Quarantine Edition)

I wasn’t paying attention yet to have caught The Specials in their prime (I had done too little and was much too young). But, when I found them, meaning really finally say with them, they immediately clicked. So much energy, so much attitude, and so much reality in the lyrics (if my pun didn’t make you stop reading, there is line after catchy line like “you’ve done too much, much too young / now you’re married with a son when you should be having fun with me”).

Now that we’re all in/entering quarantines, “Ghost Town” is an obvious reference point to make. By all means, post that on social media and let’s make some new Specials fans. Just in case some of us want/need a different version of “lyrics with isolation in them,” I do want to propose an alternate track, “Blank Expression.” There is still emptiness, there is still walking around with “no one around,” but it’s a happier vibe. Stay safe out there. The Specials are here for you.
