The 23-year-old Captain of the American National Team, Tyler Adams, had a rough press conference leading up to the US versus Iran game at the 2022 World Cup.
It started with being corrected on the pronunciation of “Iran.” It continued with a question about how he feels representing a country that is still struggling with racism so publicly.
Tyler Adams response:
My apologies on the pronunciation of your country. You know, there’s discrimination everywhere you go. One thing that I’ve learned, especially from living abroad in the past years and having to fit in in different cultures, is that in the US we’re continuing to make progress every single day.
Obviously, it takes longer to understand, and through education – it’s super important, like you just educated me now on the pronunciation of your country. So, yeah, it’s a process. So long as you see progress, that’s the most important thing.
With a thoughtful, on-the-spot response like this, I have no doubts about why he’s our Captain.
