Change Starts With Where You’re At
When you want to make a change, start with where you’re at.
Take this quote, via Farnam Street:
You control your starting position more than you think. For specific advice, find someone a step or two ahead of you. For general advice, find someone older who can put things in perspective.
If you already know what you’re looking to do, find someone who is doing it, but at a scale or level that feels achievable to you in the not-so-distant future. These “few steps ahead” people are suprisingly easy to find (and a big part of why I’m on Twitter).
If you need a broader perspective to figure out which smaller steps you might take next, seek someone with a lot of experience. You don’t have to agree with everything they say or even follow their advice, but anyone who has survived in a game you are interested in playing for a respectable amount of time will have valuable insights for you.
Once you know where you are, you can use your network to figure out where you’re going. If you know how to. Look at your starting position and feel empowered.
