Corporate Mindset: Don’t Get Fired – Freelancer Mindset: Go Get Hired
Colin Chung says leaving his corporate job is what taught him resiliency.
When you get hired by a company to do a job for an indefinite amount of time, they hold the ability to determine how your tomorrow’s go.
You might get promoted. You might get fired. You might lose your red stapler.
When you freelance, you have to get hired all of the time. Not in the “don’t get fired” sense, but in the literal “when you finish this job you’re going to have to find another one” sense.
Freelancers see jobs as projects.
At a company you don’t have to get re-hired in between projects. In Colin’s world, you do. And that’s what made him more resilient.
The chance to get hired every day. The risk that you won’t. It starts out daunting. Then it’s focusing. If you’re good at it, it’s liberating.
There’s something to be said about waking up looking for how you’ll create value today.
I don’t think you have to be a freelancer to have this mindset either, but, don’t get fired and go get hired are two very different mindsets.
