Dorks Are Funny, Cool People Aren't

John August with Mike Birbiglia

When John August and Drew Barrymore were talking about making Charlie’s Angels they focused on vibes first.

They knew the girls had to be super cool and confident. But, they also knew they had to be human, which meant they had to be dorks too.

Because dorks are funny, cool people aren’t.

This difference, between aspirational and unreachable versus aspirational and relatable is everything.

It takes the scarcity away and puts the humanity of the characters front and center.

What a brilliant nuance I’d never considered before.

Luxury is impressive until the vanity and pretentiousness make it lame. I can think of a million products and services who could benefit from knowing this.

Embrace your inner dork.
