George Glass is the acclaimed mixing engineer behind the breakout album Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1 - and he doesn't exist.

Not by that name, anyway. He's a made-up person.

Twice made-up, actually, which helps to know.

For the casual or non-Brady Bunch fans (hello, I am one of you and had to look this up) - George Glass was a fictional character on the show. Jan invented him as a boyfriend that sounded real but, classic teenager strategy, you wouldn't know him.

Which makes the mixing credit joke even better.

When Jazzy Jeff founded A Touch of Jazz, his production company, he was already aware of how a hip-hop producer would be judged for being associated with - let alone producing - different styles of music. The late 90s were different like that. We didn't have the Rick Rubin-ification of cross-genre producers in the public sphere yet.

So even if Jeff grew up on jazz and soul records, when he was putting Jill Scott's debut together, he knew he couldn't let his name taint it. He pulled a just deep enough joke of a reference and put it on the credits instead.

You put the project above all else.

Do great work. Don't compromise the standards. Be aware of how others will perceive it - when to put your thumb on the scale, and when to keep your fingerprints off the finished product.

And if you end up with an alias along the way?

Make that yours too.
