Just Press Record: Aaron Carnes (In Defense of Ska) and Daniel Crosby (The Soul Of Wealth)

the ska-pseudonyms in the intro alone are worth you pressing play

What’s a shrink who writes about money stuff have in common with a journalist who spends his time defending the 90’s most hated subgenre?

Daniel Crosby dropped a gem when I got to interview him for The Intentional Investor. In between talking about earning his degree in clinical psychology, changing career paths into applied behavioral finance after graduation, and later becoming a multi-time published author, keynote speaker, et cetera(!), Crosby dropped the details on his high school punk/ska band Society’s Hemroid. NOTED. We talked about it more outside of the interview and I started sending him episodes/posts from the next character in this story.

Aaron Carnes is a longtime journalist, and more recently, the author and podcaster behind In Defense of Ska. Carnes not only writes about a genre that’s near and dear to my heart, but he writes about it with a level of respect that I learned, stems from his time, also in a teenage ska/punk band, Flat Planet. NOTED (again).

When I found out that both Crosby and Carnes had books coming out this October, it seemed like a great excuse to get them off the normal book tour circuit, and into a conversation about the psychology behind a music style people on the internet seem to love to hate.

There’s a lot of love in this conversation. And funny stories. And, even some genre crossing magic. Seriously, the synth-pop in a local park festival story alone—Carnes tells it at the beginning of this conversation, about how his ska band won over a whole crowd of electronic keyboard loving indoor kids who spontaneously found themselves inspired and in need of their merch, you’ve just got to hear him tell it and how Crosby reacts. The world is divided, but this is the kind of story that gives me faith in humanity.

Plus, see if you can guess the ska-pseudonyms I picked to introduce each of them at the beginning before you press play (because I am pretty proud of these)! Let me know if you had a favorite.
