Podcast Of The Week: Q-Tip and Questlove

Podcast people with deep catalogs – this is me going on record saying this – I LOVE it when you re-share old stuff. Ok, and just to be clear, I am referring to the really cool old stuff. We’re trusting you to know the difference.

I listened to this Q-Tip Questlove Supreme appearance years ago and it blew my mind. It got re-shared recently and I got sucked all the way back in, all over again. The history here, it’s actually epic.

He tells the story about how he cut half a bar up for the loop in “Check the Rhyme.” This may seem like a minor detail, but when he did it – everybody else was just flipping the entire break. Tip was one of the first to make a sample longer than a sound and shorter than a complete phrase. We’re talking moon landing steps, ok?!

There’s also a bit about how “Don’t Walk Away Boy” by Jade is the bassline to “Award Tour” that – pfffffff.

Just put it on. It’s a short book in length, but if you’re a 90s hip-hop, jazz, or indie person, this will make you so happy too. And again, the Jade bassline?!?!
