Shorten The Gap Between Knowing And Doing

Next time you need a dropkick to the soul, pick up Glennon Doyle’s Untamed.

I could (and very well may) write a hundred posts based on the number of notes I took while reading it. But, today – here’s just one thought:

Shorten the gap between the knowing and the doing.

This is a reminder to practice in public. We have to try stuff out. We have to put ourselves on the line. We have to do the things we say we want to do.

Want to be a better writer? Well, what’d you write today?

Want to be a better communicator? Who’d you tell something to today and what happened?

Want to finally learn that Wes Montgomery version of “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” you’ve been half-toiling around with for 20 years? There’s like, at least three YouTube tutorials you’ve already bookmarked that pop up every time you search for something else – let’s go already?!*

If we want to improve, we have to shorten the gap between the things we know and the things we do.

This is practice. This is the practice. It’s the basis for a practice. And, it’s the only way we grow.

First we know. Next we do. Then it’s done. Afterward we can do it again or move the hell on. Either way, it’s how progress is made.

*sorry, that’s a hyper-personal example. But, I’m publicly accountable now. Feel free to email me and ask how it’s coming along.
