Sufficiency > Scarcity
The first thing I do when I wake up is start asking questions.
Did I get enough sleep? Do I have enough time to exercise? Will I get to everything I need to get to today on top of the crap I didn’t get to yesterday?
Know what that is? A scarcity mindset.
Not so good.
A better alternative, via Brené Brown’s classic, The Gifts of Imperfection, is a sufficiency mindset.
It’s not about quantity. Maybe I really didn’t get enough sleep. But, it is about mindset. “I’ve got what I needed in order for me to do this.” (“And tonight I’m getting into bed earlier, blah blah blah, etc.”)
Instead of being negative about whatever is scarce in our lives, a sufficiency mindset challenges us to start with gratitude.
You can still measure what matters. You can still quantify your goals. But, to be happy, to have some peace, to be present so you can actually do the work that you claim matters to your soul, think in terms of sufficiency.
Sufficiency > scarcity.
Every. Damn. Time.
ps. We’ll see how this works tomorrow morning.
