Sunday Music: Cold Coffee, Cocaine, and a Prayer Meeting

We got some new/old Prince recently and it’s magnificent. His musical chops, sense of rhythm and harmony, and his visceral humanity always floors me – especially when he’s performing solo. There’s something about drawing on the history of music and inserting it into the present that while I am sure this is dated feeling to “kids these days”, it’s perennially special when we hear it done this well. Check out “Cold Coffee and Cocaine” and then some classic Charlie Mingus to hear not only the overlap but also the trans-generational musicality. Let them transport you and think about the power of influence in art.
