Childish Gambino’s video for “This is America” has gotten quite a bit of attention, and for good reason. Discussion question: if this isn’t America, then what is?

Frank Turner’s anthemic “1933” picks up on some of the same themes, along with (probably what most people find troubling) the “happy-pop / bleak-despair” dichotomies. Turner’s worried about the state of the world and is hitting the bar while warning us, “don’t go mistaking your house burning down for the dawn.” Now that’s a lyric.
