Sunday Music: Remembering Roy Hargrove
Hargrove’s trumpet was consistently present in my life from the mid-90s on. Crossing genre boundaries, their was his young jazz phenom work, the soul work – particularly with D’Angelo, Badu and Common (my real gateway to following him), and then the rest of the post-modern jazz world he continued to occupy right up to his death.
Here are just a few favorite cuts as I revisit his back catalogue this weekend. He was 49.
“Spanish Joint” by D’Angelo
“So What / Impressions” on the Directions in Music Live album with Herbie Hancock and Michael Brecker
And a live version of “Stasbourg / St. Denis”
