Sunday Music: "Strange Powers" By The Magnetic Fields
I always appreciated The Magnetic Fields, but it was my wife who finally cracked the genius of their catalog for me with this song years ago. There's an electricity to their poetry that feels both understated and infinite:
On the Ferris wheel
Looking out on Coney Island
Under more stars than
There are prostitutes in Thailand
Our hair in the air
Our lips blue from cotton candy
When we kiss, it feels
Like a flying saucer landing
And I can't sleep
'Cause you got strange powers
You're in my dreams
Strange powers
My wife turns 40 today. We're celebrating all week because some birthdays demand it, you know? The party started days ago and will stretch out beyond this post - through family, friends, and yes, our dogs (who are always ready for more people to sneak them snacks).
But it's songs like this that remind me why we click.
We don't need a specific set of specifics, just that spark of electricity - letting the mysteries and magic do their work. She’s got strange powers. Maybe I do too. That's the beautiful thing about us.
Happy 40th, Valle. Turn this song up with us today:
In case you missed it, this performance (by the band, not including this song) was great too:
ps. You know what love is.
