Sunday Music: Woke Up Today And Decided To Kill My Ego

Sturgill Simpson just did the country equivalent of a remix album by taking a bunch of songs and making them bluegrass-y. It’s great. And if you have a long drive or a bunch of work to do, just throw on the aptly titles, “Cuttin’ Grass – Vol 1 (Butcher Shoppe Sessions)” and let it roll. I deeply appreciate this record.

One classic remake is, “Just Let Go.” It’s a stoic, alt-country masterpiece, now reimagined. Here are the words. Go ahead, get your existential crisis on. This is Sturgill’s psychedelic poetry at its finest.

Woke up today and decided to kill my egoIt ain’t ever done me no good no howGonna break through and blast off to the BardoIn them flowers of light far away from the here and now

Taking a 49 divine day vacationFrom reality and all else in betweenGonna transmigrate to my destinationFar beyond time in an eternal dream

But am I dreaming or am I dyingEither way I don’t mind at allOh it feels so good you just can’t help but cryingOh you have to let go so the soul may fall

Oh my God it’s so beautifulEverything is a part of meIt’s so hard looking through all the lies made of woolBut if you close your eyes it becomes so easy to see
