The World Doesn’t Change From The Top (Julie Fredrickson’s Vogue Story)

When Julie Frederickson was growing up, she thought she wanted to work for Vogue

They were the tastemakers. She wanted to be a tastemaker. She thought she had the eye for it, so why not?

But somewhere along the way she realized how taste isn’t made on the top.

The world doesn’t change from the top down. It feels like it does. But it’s a reflection, or an abstraction of sorts.

All change starts at the bottom and works its way up.

If you really want to be a tastemaker, you don’t want to be at the top talking about what’s already happened.

If you want to make tastes, you start at the bottom and change the world via whatever is happening.

I highly recommend Julie Fredrickson’s appearance on Infinite Loops (below) and subscribing/following her blog and socials. She’s living a version of this realization and it directly feeds her venture capital work/approach. I love to see this level of alignment in practice.
