Want To Find Your People? Follow The Trail Of Breadcrumbs

Breadcrumbs. Little, simple, inevitable breadcrumbs. Sam Hinkie says the trick to finding great people to work with, for, or just to know, is in following the trail of breadcrumbs they’ve left behind them and imaging where it might lead in the future.

Breadcrumbs might be where people worked before. They might be unique life experiences. They could be content they created like blog posts or videos or art. Everybody has a trail. Some people have more interesting trails than others.

The big question then becomes: is the trajectory increasing or decreasing?

Is the person we want to hire to level up our business moving from run to sprint?

Is the person we want to work for in need of a boost we can provide? Could we push them over the top (and will they turn around and pull us over with them)?

Is the person we just met on their way to do something interesting? Do we want to hear more about it down the road?

Breadcrumbs, breadcrumbs, breadcrumbs. They’re all around us. We just have to notice them to start following their trail and seeing where they’re headed.

I highly recommend Sam Hinkie’s full interview with Patrick O’Shaughnessy on the Invest Like The Best Podcast, “Find Your People,” ep. 204.
