We Change More Than We Will Ever Predict: My Top JUST PRESS RECORD '24 Moment #5
feat. Julia Carreon and Hal Hershfield
I wanted Hal Hershfield to meet Julia Carreon because both of them think deeper about how not just people of different ages act within the same world, but how we as people see our own thoughts, feelings, and opinions evolve as we age.
See the nuance there?
We’re people. We’re messy. And we’re doing our best to design the world for everybody all at once, but it’s really hard. So we have to learn to be kind. To others, sure, but also ourselves—our past, present, and future selves.
Julia dropped this bomb on both of us, and you can watch my face and hear Hal’s reaction:
But what I wanted to say, from a personal level, is that when I was 44, I was managing 500 people in 13 states and I thought that I would forever want to be a big executive who traveled around on a plane and got more and more power. If only I’d been able to tell my current 54 year old self that I couldn’t have cared less about any of that s*** at 54, then I would have saved a lot more money, and I would have put my ego in a box a lot sooner, because what I wanted at 44 is completely different from what I want at 54.
Hal takes it all in and then reframes it, using the end of history illusion, which he defines as “[the] idea that we think we’re fully baked, now.”
Insert the screeching sounds of e-braked tires on the blacktop of my soul.
All of life that led up to this present moment you are sitting in, look back. We’ve come so far. We are the culmination of all those moments and it’s amazing.
But, you know what happens between now and later?
A f*** ton more moments. And if look back and think we changed from then, just wait until you see how much you change until next time you look back.
Instead of trying to think you’re fully baked now, try giving yourself permission to be a permanent work in progress.
Admit it. We change more than we’ll ever admit. And it’s a be-yooo-tee-ful thing.
Like Julia can admit to. Like Hal can eloquently explain. Like I can almost cry with relief over hearing.
This is why Julia and Hal are my #5 moment from Just Press Record in 2024. Watch their clip in the episode below, and check out their full show too (because it is FULL of stories like this one):
