It’s part of the content problem. Where people want words to lead to one outcome, be it a reaction or an engagement or whatever they do online these days.

Genre is a shortcut that leads to an emotional response, and an emotional response is a shortcut to an action. It’s so boring.

AND, life doesn’t work that way.

Lifetime movies do - but that’s not real (real) life.

Alan Moore, when asked about genre, put it about as succinctly as it gets - especially if making content isn’t your goal:

❝

"My experience of life is that it is not divided up into genres; it's a horrifying, romantic, tragic, comical, science-fiction cowboy detective novel. You know, with a bit of pornography if you're lucky."

Alan Moore

If you are resisting content, go ahead and resist genre too.

Throw a little bit of everything into your work.
