Mess around time is important time.

I'm not good at scheduling it. Probably because the ADHD monkey that runs my brain just randomly asserts it into things and that's mostly how the whole operation works.

But, the monkeying matters.

It's where random curiosity gets a chance to turn into something. The non-justifiable side-conversation that becomes a thing you do just because it's fun to do.

I'm sharing one of those with you today - a variation on Just Press Record I didn't see coming.

It started when I asked Joseph Moore a random question about Drive-By Truckers and he launched into his "Jason Isbell Theory of Everything."

You don't want to see that back and forth. It’s a mess, but man was it fun. Lightworks in my mind. Pure brain candy. But I don't expect to have that kind of music conversation with a historian turned finance theorist. Stranger things, sure - but still.

So in our quest to prove to each other which songs best represent American life, we each pitched one song and just pressed record to see what happened. Joseph's pick is below. My pick will be out next (because, the B-side, you know?!)

We limited ourselves to one each to start. But now I think we open it up - I'm looking for submissions. If you have a song idea, contact me for pitch instructions.

The floor (re: smallest thing) this will produce is a playlist. The ceiling (re: coolest thing/biggest thing) is - OK, there is no ceiling. We’re having fun.

Because on the way to whatever nowhere this is heading, I think I just found a new excuse to put music conversation time back into my life. Which is the kind of thing the monkey lives for.

We’re calling it Cultish Creative Music Club. Here's the first submission and addition, messy pitches and all. My guitar even makes a surprise appearance. These episodes will live in the Just Press Record feeds wherever you get your podcasts, too.
