Character Lives in the Trying
Yeah, I'm quoting Friday Night Lights again
Life is full of losing.
I’ve picked myself up and dusted myself off more times than I could recount if I tried.
But, it’s fine.
No other choice, so far as I can see.
But not everybody operates this way.
What makes a good character from a bad character - or having good character from having bad character?
You keep trying.
Not succeeding.
OK, not JUST succeeding, so -
Probably failing.
Some.
But getting back up, and doing it again, or something else, and mostly, not giving up wanting to exert some effort.
My wife and I actually just finished our start-to-finish rewatch of Friday Night Lights, but this quote won’t leave me:
"Listen to me. I said you need to strive to be better than everyone else. I didn't say you needed to be better than everyone else. But you gotta try. That's what character is. It's in the try."
I think it’s because I’ve known too many people who weren’t into trying.
They’re into complaining or wining or winning/declaring victory in victimhood.
They’re bad characters in my story.
I can accept it now.
The people who won’t stop trying though, they’re something else.
I told my wife, before we started off on this crawl through 5 seasons of Texas high school soap opera football, “At our best, and a little at our worst, the Taylors remind me of us.”
I know why.
It’s the character.
It’s in the try.
Across all of the domains.
Life is still full of losing.
So what.
Try.

(Valle and I, not quite in Texas, but definitely trying in Chicago, 2025
