punk-tech, news-loses, and jamming econo as D. Boone intended

Cultish Creative Weekly Recap (8/17/2024)

Good advice, for you and me: make the thing you’d want. It’s on my mind because -

I listened to a podcast episode with Vic Ruggiero and wrote a whole post on it. That post got passed around, made it’s way to Vic, turned into a conversation, and made me realize the podcast I’d love to hear him on would include him talking about community building. After all, you don’t keep a band in business for 30+ years, touring the world, without a crazy-strong community.

Christina Garnett has been a Chief Customer Officer, social listener, and community builder for brands like HubSpot, SemRush, and all sorts of Fortune 500 companies and startups. She’s also about as far from a punk rock scene person as it gets too.

Which makes this conversation, between a fast-scaling tech exec and a rock-steady underground punk all the more special to Just Press Record on:

Just take it all as a reminder to stay curious and find your people.

Breaking News got into the fake AI campaign rally images, what Rusty Guinn is now calling “Metametastisis” (aka why the news is less about news itself and more about the vibes of the news), and I go full-on Chumbawamba at the end.

Market panic-shenanigans on TV got you down? Jack and I had some fun with this, an echo of the work-work conversations I’m having non-stop these days:

And hey, there’s the writing too. Posts you might have missed this week!

Do you jam econo? I jam econo. You should too - a little Minutemen riff for you.

How much do we change over time? Some parts a lot. Others, not at all. Worth thinking about. Deeply and shallowly (I can’t help it).

Kyla Scanlon and I accidentally stumbled over a Chumbawamba reference in this (live!) podcast recording. I intentionally fell down a rabbit hole on this. There are some amazing quotes in this “Chumbawamba Corrections/Clarifications” note.

The Christina/Vic podcast above got me going - I love this contrast between Badwill And Mediocrity Vs. Goodwill And Amazing so so much. Not to mention, this compare/contrast riff about Breadcrumbs and Billboards that I’m already using with my marketing people at work too.

OH AND THIS IS COOL - I got quoted in Big Think’s weekly, The Nightcrawler (thanks Erik Markowitz):

There is only one god and his name is Death, and there is only one thing we say to Death: “I GET KNOCKED DOWN…”

Hey, if it’s in my head, it might as well be in yours too.
