Dead Next Month Vs. Dead In 100 Years Questions
Luca Dellanna trying to trigger an existential crisis for me and Dylan O'Sullivan
The reason I needed Dylan O’Sullivan to be a part of this conversation was to be my existential crisis buffer when Luca Dellanna said something like this,
You need to ask yourself, “If I keep living this way, will I be satisfied with the results?
Will I be satisfied with the results if I keep living this way and I die in the next month?
Will I be satisfied with the results if I keep living this way and I die in a hundred years?”
What’s right in the short term may not be right in the long term.
It’s the night guy vs. morning guy thing on a whole other level.
And, what’s right in the long term might not be right in the short term.
So we have to find a balance for ourselves.
A little now if it doesn’t hurt us later (hello coffee, hello wine, my teeth will be fine).
A little now if it definitely helps us later (hello morning stretches and workouts, I promise not to skip you as much in 2025).
We always have to be stretching and working out our brains to think on these multiple time scales too.
If you just want to see a clip of Luca explaining this idea, neatly packaged within the story of his cancer diagnosis, I shared it on Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. Make sure to connect with me while you’re there too. I’ll keep sharing clips in these places.
psst. If you missed this conversation with Dylan and Luca on Just Press Record, it’s full of stuff like this
And if you didn’t hear when Julia Carreon met Hal Hershfield on the show, imaging life at various points along your timeline was a massive theme with them too. (It’s almost like I think about this stuff too much…)
