Finding Community In A World Of Racoons (Paul Millerd And Ben Hunt on Just Press Record)

I’m fascinated by people who see the scripts for the stories we tell ourselves. How they figure out how to retell them, in ways that best suit their unique journey. 

Paul Millerd initially put himself on a “become a successful consultant” track. And the people around him in life helped encourage it. The schools, the job applications, the known script. But, on the way, he realized he didn’t want to become a successful consultant with all the lifestyle trappings it almost immediately started bringing. 

He saw the script, and he flipped it. 

Ben Hunt went down the academic route for years after finishing his education. The system was urging him forward, teasing tenure, offering a version of how to win the game by following that script. Which feels would feel extra ironic for a game theory academic to not notice the script. But, on the way, of course he did. And, he realized there were parts of the “become a successful academic” game he didn’t want to play. 

He saw the script, and he flipped it.*

Funny things happen when you step off the paths everyone else is following.

Funny things happen when you start to see the patterns of how you can “win” by following a particular script.

We are all called, encouraged, and sometimes pushed down these pre-scripted paths by people in our lives who think or claim to know what’s best for us. In some cases it’s best for them. In all cases, only we know what’s right for us.

Not best, right. Which takes searching. Flipping scripts and exploring multiple paths, in theory and in practice.
