If you want to get to a dystopia…
And I know, nobody wants to get to a dystopia.
They’re no fun.
The rooms are lousy, the air quality is bad.
Don’t even get me started about the people and the inhabitants.
Dystopias barely get a star. They’re the rare 0-star review. Just a google page that says maybe they exist but check Facebook.
So if you wanted to get to one, or more likely, if you want to avoid getting to one, you should think about where they come from.
And, the disappointing answer is, the only way you get to a dystopia is by making (or trying to make) a utopia.
In the same way you can’t have perfectly broken without first having perfectly constructed, it’s the chasing of impenetrable ideals that gets us into trouble.
The way to not end up in a dystopia is to avoid chasing a utopia.
It doesn’t exist.
It never has, and it can’t, and that’s ok.
ps. this post was inspired by Jason Buck’s appearance on Infinite Loops with Jim O'Shaughnessy. Full episode here:
