SCENES

unpacking the s*** that makes a good scene

SCENES

Scenes are made of artists, curators, and the communities they build around them.

The communities are full of other artists and curators too. Not exactly exclusively. But they’re part of it.

The individual identities, the collective identities, in community.

And culture is everyone in the community doing the work of mixing together.

Doesn’t even have to be for very long.

Scenes can be quick. Scenes can be a flash. They just have to be seen (yeah, I know, but also - yeah, right?).

Witnessed. Felt. Observed from up close and sensed from afar.

Scenes have levels or at least layers too. These are the “it” bits different sub-groups commune around. The longer a scene lasts the more these evolve. They’re what gets talked about. They’re what gets mythologized.

And scenes don’t have to be anything more than there

They just have to accomplish making something other people will someday wish they were there for too.

Only one way to make a scene:

Make cool s***,

Find cool s***.

Talk about cool s*** with other people who think that s***’s cool too.

Curiosity, baby.

That’s it.

All of it.

PS. this isn’t some emo-creator BS. I made this note after having “a moment” when I saw Patti Astor passed away. She was a real scene builder. I’ll likely write something else about her, but for now, read the obits and go watch Wild Style.
