This From That

Jonathan Johnson to Jada, or JB to Jay Dee

Sometimes I marvel at how one thing becomes another. It's cooler than it sounds.

It can actually be extremely basic, like simply expanding a snippet.

Jump to about 3 minutes and 20 seconds in to this song by Samuel Jonathan Johnson, which the YouTube watch time says we aren’t alone in looking for, and here that string laden transition.

Then think about how it got flipped to this Jadakiss classic by The Alchemist:

Or, if you want a more abstracted take, I’ve been stuck on this one lately. Listen to James Brown’s classic, “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World.”

It’s almost impossible to think about changing anything in there. But Dilla found a way. Not so subtle that it’s hidden, but he found a whole new bounce:

Over and over I remind myself of Virgil Abloh idea, that a 3% change confers ownership.

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. You’re allowed to be inspired by the wheel’s very existence. It’s OK.

From there, you just have to make it roll the way you want it to.
